Online Search Tips
When using an online search engine (such as Google), use the following tips to help find the information you are looking for:
1. Put phrases in quotations (ie. "global warming," "catcher in the rye").
2. Use a plus sign to include search terms and a minus sign to exclude a word. For example, if you are researching depression, you might search: depression -great -economic, to exclude results about the Great Depression and other economic downturns.
3. Limit the search results by site type. For university/college websites, use site:edu; for governmental websites, use site:gov; for nonprofit websites, use site:org. For example, if you are researching pollution in Lake Michigan, you might search: pollution +"lake michigan" +site:gov.
