The Booked for Lunch Club - Grades 6-8

The 6th and 7th grade chapter of the “Booked for Lunch” Club will be held during lunch and recess in the Upper School Library.  The first date for us to meet is Thursday, February 9th.

This month, we will be reading “When You Reach Me” by Rebecca Stead.  By sixth grade, Miranda and her best friend, Sal, know how to navigate their New York City neighborhood. They know where it’s safe to go, like the local grocery store, and they know whom to avoid, like the crazy guy on the corner.  But things start to unravel. Sal gets punched by a new kid for what seems like no reason, and he shuts Miranda out of his life. The apartment key that Miranda’s mom keeps hidden for emergencies is stolen. And then Miranda finds a mysterious note scrawled on a tiny slip of paper.  I am coming to save your friend’s life, and my own.  I must ask two favors. First, you must write me a letter.  The notes keep coming, and Miranda slowly realizes that whoever is leaving them knows all about her, including things that have not even happened yet. Each message brings her closer to believing that only she can prevent a tragic death. Until the final note makes her think she’s too late.

The 8th grade chapter of the “Booked for Lunch” Club will be held during lunch and recess in the Upper School Library.  The first date for us to meet is Wednesday, February 8th.

This month, we will be reading “Thirteen Reasons Why” by Jay Asher.  Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker - his classmate and crush - who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah's voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out why. Clay spends the night crisscrossing his town with Hannah as his guide. He becomes a firsthand witness to Hannah's pain, and learns the truth about himself-a truth he never wanted to face.

Students are responsible for finding a copy of the book.  Limited seats are available, so be sure to sign up soon!  Please return the completed RSVP slip below to the main office ASAP.

NOTE: Please be sure you read the book before we meet so that we can discuss the book with the group.
